Development

As only the 2nd Irish person ever to chair a committee in the European Parliament, I have had the honour of chairing the Committee on Development (DEVE) since July 2024.

 

Our committee is a champion of the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Agenda 2030. At a time of growing inequalities and global insecurity our commitment to eradicating poverty, helping those in dire need, and improving our relations with developing countries is more important than ever.

 

We strive to bring attention to the pressing issues affecting humanitarian assistance as well as to long-term strategies for ensuring development efforts are inclusive and sustainable.

 

The EU's contribution to global sustainable development is vital and our Parliament plays a key role in deciding the budget for EU cooperation and aid spending, keeping a close watch on the European Commission and all those involved in using EU funds, and shaping EU policies that affect developing countries.

 

We meet with policymakers, stakeholders and experts from around the world to discuss solutions and hear what is really needed on the ground from those who know it best.
